railroad travellers...

I'm only asking this because I am genuinely interested...but does anyone else out there walk the tracks or jump trains to travel? I have never been able to jump a train as there are not any boxcars open. Is this a thing of the past or is it still a way of life for some people? I would love to hook up with someone who knows the lifestyle as I seem to be pretty bad at it. But it is a way to avoid hiways which seem to draw more attention and hitchhiking is illegal almost everywhere. Also there are the rumors of gangs and violence associated with it. How much is myth I don't know. I would like to hear from anyone who wants to talk about this....thanks

hmmm I would think it is in style ( not in the popular sense ) but hey, I hitched a ride on the back of a truck this summer just for fun. The train next to my old house was only used for cargo so that would have been an easy hitch too. Theres nothing to it, if there are passengers itll be more difficult, although in Europe you can always bribe the controller don't know if you can do so here. Hope it helps

Welcome to the forums andreit. :)

hi Rose.
Well for example in Romania, a 1-way ticket costs about 20$ in canadian $.
Instead of paying for the ticket, every Romanian knows that they can just give 5$ to the controller instead of the company. They make money off tourists rather than their citizens.
It's good both for the traveller(travel cheaper) and the employee(gets more $ since wages barely make ends meet).
