As I see it there is no need to be on the streets.
Just Get a few friends, or go yourself, and scout out empty and unused buildings. There are usually a few around in any settlement.
Then, after watching the place for a while, find an open window or door. There usually is one if you look hard enough.
Get the electricity and water turned on by contacting your local networks, and find things at your local charity stores.
Furnish to taste!
This simple guide should help people off the streets and into the Squatting Movement.
Try it, you might like it!

Thanks Ross. Squatting is pretty big amongst homeless people but they do tend to be harrassed by police once the neighbours alert the police to their presence.
It's dead easy to find good places to squat in Australia anyway, just look for something where the garden has been let go and likey no one lives there.
The more ppl who know about a squat though the sooner the cops find out and it gets closed down.
Weird thing that happened ahead of the planned chogm (commonwealth heads of government meeting or something like that). It was planned for Brisbane, so part of the security process for the city was to go and kick everyone out of every squat, board the squats up tight. Then there were tons of people sleeping in public space. Doesn't sound like a brilliant security strategy to me. Sounds like an excuse to come down on the homeless.
Anyway, if anyone wants a peek at some photos of squats there are some here: www.homeless.org.au/streetkids/

No it's not safe, more dangerous for girls too.
It gets safer the more people you know on the streets, but random people can (and do) just walk in and out of these places anytime. Some people go there just to use drugs too, so you have quite a few people coming and going sometimes.

Yeah, you should be careful if you're going to squat. I only did that if I was with my friends, because you never know who you could run into and some of the people using empty buildings are up to no good. We never really got harassed by the police, but if they know about it they'll shut it down. However, I've never had any luck getting water or electricity turned on.

Squatting. Not a good idea especially for a woman.End up sleeping in the same room as people you've never met (not a very good sleep).
Last resort.
When I stayed in squats I always had a knife or something ,so I would imagine everyone else did the same.It was preety scary when fights broke out.
Be very carefull on who you choose to stay with.

I Used To Squat Sometimes It Is Not That Hard To Do But It Is Best Done After Dark And Vacate Before Sunrise So Nobody Will Notice You And Make Sure Dwelling Is Not Pre-occupied By Other Bums Or There May Be Trouble
Also For Homless In America Word To The Wise In Most Places In The United States This Is Considered Burglary To A Habitation Whether Vacant Or Not And Is A Felony Charge Which Can Lead To Jail Time Or Even A Lenghty Prison Sentence If You Already Have A Record
