If you are about to become homeless in the UK .. the links below will take you to a site where information and advice about homeless persons rights are explained.

My advice to anyone about to become homeless is to seek advice before the event rather than afterwards. Being street homeless can be likened to a rapid downward spiral .. or a slippery slope that you have little, if any, control over. Whilst your situation might seem urgent to you, you will be treated as just a part of a very slow moving rehabilitation system ... a number and not a priority.

Many local authorities in places like London are turning would be applicants for accommodation away and advising them to return to their own local / regional authorities.

If you are homeless you should contact your local council for emergency housing assistance. The council will normally help if you:

• Have children or are pregnant
• Have medical problems or a disability
• Are an elderly person or aged between 16 and 18
• Were made homeless because of an emergency, for example a fire, or because you were fleeing violence
• Have not become homeless intentionally

Even if you do not fall into any of these categories, the council will be able to give you advice.

If you are in dispute with your landlord and you fear harassment and/or eviction, you should contact a Law Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau or Housing Advice Centre for advice. If you are not working or you are on low income, legal advice may be free of charge.

If you are suffering harassment or serious anti-social behaviour you should contact you Neighbourhood Housing Officer who will be able to offer advice and support.

If the bottom line is that you must move onto the streets, try and leave any non essential valuables with friends or relatives .. Theft of personal belongings is common with street life, and although the undesirables of our numbers are few .. they are there.
