Dominic

Cool idea for a thread!

Well I never got the concept of an anonymous handle when I first started joining forums and in most forums my first name is rare enough that it wasn't taken by anyone else who just wanted to use their first name. So I just use my first name 'Dominic' most of the time.

For this forum, I use my real name on the streets so it seemed fit to just use my real name here too.

I've heard some pretty cool street names over the years and everyone who has a street name has a story behind how they picked it or got it.

Some of the nicknames I've suffered though and am willing to disclose include:

Michael as in Michael Corleone from the Godfather movie - one street outreach I lead we all named ourselves after a character from the movie and of course I had to be Michael and referred to each other in character all night and did not respond to each other unless called by our character's name (total laugh).

Truckie - given to me by friends based on my style of driving. I drive a van, have driven vans over the years 90% more than any other type of car. Vans are bigger than cars, trucks are bigger than vans. Everyone gets out of the way of trucks, regardless of what I'm driving I tend to drive like I'm driving a truck apparently so one group of friends called me the Truckie, could have something to do with an incident where I cut off a truck while driving a van and we all lived to tell the tale.

Oh and for the record 'the co-accused' is not a valid nickname. Stop calling me that! lol

well driving like that i would have called you the dominator...truckies are the best drivers they never hesitate they just power through...you must be like this in your real life as well to achieve what you have. i think it's a fine nickname
its fun to play games no matter how old you are..the movie character night is a great idea....
cheers

Definitely a great idea to start this thread!! I know most of my friends by "street names", almost every young person who's homeless seems to have a nickname. I think it's sometimes cos of the cops, alot of people have warrants and don't want their friends to shout out their name in the middle of the city, and also because there just seems to be so many streeties with the same given names, it can get very confusing. I don't think it's to be "hardcore" cos people have street names like fish and skittles.

My street name is "skater girl". All of my friends and almost all of my youthworkers address me as sk8r girl, only my family uses my given name. I got that nickname as I always had my skateboard with me on the streets (cos I didn't have anywhere to leave it, and love skating). So many people saw me skating and sang that (horrible) Avril Lavigne song skater boi, with she instead of he in the lyrics - "she was a skater girl, they said see you later girl..." so people started callin me sk8r girl. I prefer sk8r girl over my given name as it's one I chose for myself, and a huge part of my identity. I guess sk8r_rat is just a variation of that, but it's not meant to be anonymous.

Good idea with "the dominator" fudge, I think you should change yours to that dominic, sounds real hardcore  once those spammers saw that username they'd think twice bout posting lol.

sk8r girl.

I've never had a nickname.

Hey mine is purple princess which is wat i use on most of the internet as i dont like to use my real name - which is more of a safety thing for me.

the way i got it was at the time i had purple hair and a friend of mine in UK who is very unwell used to call me his princess so just put the two together.

So not a very exciting story but hey i am now PP hehehehehe

Olivia

Funnily enough, when I tried to register on here I found out that I'd already joined up like two years ago or something like that. So I just sent off for my password and found that my user name was Olivia, which is my real name.
I don't think you can change your user name so I'm kinda stuck with it - if I'd had the choice I probably would've changed it to Livvy (which is just a shortened version of my name) or Menthol Pixie (because I smoke menthol ciggys - or I did before I got pregnant - and someone from town named me the Menthol Pixie when i was homeless)

Tainted Jasmine

Gosh, what a question. When I was little I was obsessed with those alladin movies and when I was about 6 I decided that I wanted to be called Jasmine because she was my absolute hero. But hey what little girl didn't what to be a princess riding on a magic carpet?

Eventualy it just sort stuck and my parents always called me it untill the past away. The Tainted part well I just like the sound of it. You know the contrast.

Rozi
08-17-2008, 04:20 PM
I called myself Rozi because I like roses (duh!) and can be a bit thorny at times. Rozi is spelt thus (a) to be different - not likely taken (b) it's the beginning of the diminutive of rose (in a loving way) in my language (obviously not English).
As a kid I had some nicknames because I never knocked anyone out for calling me anything abusive (I was a bit of a cry-baby on that score) so natch the mean girls at school just loved calling me FATSO (Mind you when I look back on school photos I was just average) but that unkind word stuck - I let it stick - and now I am a bit of a fatso. But hey, I'm 58, and you won't make me cry by calling me stupid names. I may show you a thorn or two! These days schools deal well with the bullying issue, back in the 50s and 60s the advice from teachers was (even in a private girls' school) " Hit them back." But as I wasn't a hitter, I ended up just taking it. As I said, I'm a big girl now, and you can call me what you like - just don't call me late for dinner!

notforgotten
10-28-2008, 08:37 AM
My name just came to me when I needed an id. Notforgotten seems fitting, I know I'm not forgotten by the people I've helped as an outreach worker and more importantly.. I've not forgotten how it felt to be on the streets.

streetspirit123

My name street spirit just kind of came to me too. All my life, I've been wandering the streets almost in an in and out of consciousness state. People don't seem to notice me, and when they do it is never a good reaction, just like it would be if they saw a ghost. So I became a street spirit, who roams the streets just trying to survive and go unoticed by others cause I don't know where to go.
