Hi, all. I stumbled onto this site while looking for some Centrelink info and I've got tears in my eyes reading some of these posts. I've been homeless before (aged 17 -19 and again at 23) and in unsafe, insecure housing situations too.

Reading all this reminded me of how stressful being homeless is, and how fucking vulnerable it makes you feel. I'm finally securely housed and I had sort of forgotten a lot of the issues, but reading this site made it all come flooding back; the good youth workers, the crap ones, trying to get the welfare payment for the first time ever, (what an eye-opener) the scummy service providers and the occasional helpful ones, the youth shelters etc. Lying awake in a horrible share-house situation just stressing about being homeless again, etc.

Anyway, I've got a great place through a community housing organisation now and my kid and I love it here. What a good idea having a site like this!

and hello to all the Adelaide streeties and ex-streeties!

hi gremlin ....great to read your post ...you could be of great support to this forum....just sharing your stories with the members here is inspirational to us all...i think it very important that the stories of those who survived the streets be told....they inspire hope into those who are struggling that their lives will get better....if you don't give up on yourself.....
i'm not homeless im just a carer..i'm a grandma and i have been through and witnessed a lot of heartache....like you i'm here to offer my support any way i can drawing from my experiences and the strength of the members of this forum.....
but it is not completely selfless...this forum has helped me also....my acceptance here by the members has enabled me to realise that all the trauma i went through was not in vain...that i have learnt a great deal...of course i have a great deal more to learn...but encourageing words are a very powerful tool of hope to those who are struggling to hang on or make sense of it all

dont get discouraged here if you don't get an instant reply to your comments....sometimes there's noone on line and then sometimes everyone is on
cheers

Tom.

I lived in London too for a while. I wasn't homeless because I stayed with my older sister on and off, but wow! The poverty! My sis had a council flat in Dalston Junction and used to steal food from Sainsbury's. Roast chicken every Sunday!

I was eligible for the UB40 cos our dad was English. I tell you what, it's a lot easier being homeless in Aus!

Anyway,thanks for the welcome....
