One of the biggest shelters where I live has decided to take this on, and the community intrest and support has been overwhelming.
They are mens shelter/support center here in Joliet. What they have done is they have decided that at the end of every month, they are going to host a birthday party. This birthday party is open to anyone, homeless, no family, low income, anyone who didn't really get to celebrate thier birthday that month because of finances, homelessness, lonliness, whatever.
The community has been asked to supply cards and gifts, which they have done in abundance. The shelter has asked that people from the community give a card with a small gift costing between $2 and $3, sign the card with a first name only, and mark wether it's for a guy or girl, adult or child.
They are expecting about a hundred 'birthday boys and girls' and have 150 volunteers ready to come and help them celebrate every month. That's not even including those that had already signed up to serve the meal and take care of the behind the scenes stuff.
I think this is a really great idea and i hope it catches on and grows. everybody needs a happy birthday.
