myths and legends

in my aboriginal culture we are told many stories of creation....this is the dreamtime....our ancesters have passed these down through the many thousands of generations and are still told today....
my favourite one is 'butterfly dreaming' the creation of the butterfly....

into the tribe twin sisters were born whose features were not quite right....their faces were deformed and their feet were clubbed...
the elders called for their death as only the perfect were allowed to live and thrive...
their mother pleaded for their lives...the clan mothers took mercy and allowed them to live but with conditions.....
their mother must feed them with her food as the tribe would not waste their food on them
they must never talk or look at anyone
they must eat and sleep away from the tribe so we do not have to see their ugliness

as the sisters grew there sadness greatened...their loneliness was only relieved by the loving gaze of their mother and the stories she told them as they gathered the honeysuckle and berries...for their mother made the sweetest nectar the tribe had ever tasted...it was highly prized....and she had taught them the secret...she warned them never to tell anyone as your secret will ensure your life

one day their mother did not come to take them into the forest instead a messenger came...their mother had died and the elders had summoned them...but they must mask their face and feet before entering the camp

their lives were spared and the tribe agreed to give them meat as long as they continue to produce the sweetest nectar...
without their mothers kind and loving graces the sisters pain grew...their loneliness unending...their nights were filled with tears...

the great ancestral father heard their tears......he looked down upon them and to end their sorrow....he changed them into beautiful butterflies....

when the tribe saw these new creatures poised with delicate perfection and grace, of colours they had never seen before... they were stunned at their beauty and chased them incessantly trying to catch a glimpse ..

but the sisters did not forget their loneliness and the cruelty of the tribes repulsion of their imperfections.....they would not look upon their ugliness....so now they cannot look upon their beauty and would fly away if they got close enough to gaze upon them

even today as soon as you look upon a butterflies beauty she will fly away....but if you are kind to others she may allow you to watch her dance on a flower while she gathers her nectar
cheers
